Machine Elements
The preceding parts of this book develop the foundations of mechanics: vectors for describing forces and moments, equilibrium analysis for systems at rest, kinematics and kinetics for systems in motion, and solid mechanics for understanding stress and deformation. With these tools in hand, we now turn to the practical question every engineer eventually faces: how do we select, dimension, and design the components that make up real machines?
Mechanical engineering, in the sense used here, concerns the study of machine elements, the standardized building blocks from which virtually all mechanical systems are assembled. Fasteners hold structures together under known preload. Bearings permit controlled relative motion between parts. Springs store and release energy. Shafts transmit torque from one component to another. Welded and adhesive joints provide permanent connections where disassembly is not required. Gears, belt drives, and chain transmissions convert speed and torque between rotating members. Brakes and clutches engage and disengage motion on demand. Each of these elements rests on well-established theory, yet their successful application requires judgement informed by both analysis and practical experience.
We approach each topic along three complementary dimensions. First, we derive the governing equations and models from first principles, connecting them to the mechanics developed earlier in this book. Second, we apply these models to dimension components: selecting sizes, materials, and safety factors that meet the requirements of a given design. Third, we engage with the practical side of engineering through hands-on activities, including 3D-printable designs of bearings, shafts, and gears created parametrically in SolidWorks, as well as mechanical testing of components in the laboratory.
This combination of theory, computation, and practice reflects the workflow of modern product development. The analytical models tell us what matters and why. The computational tools let us explore parameter spaces and optimize designs efficiently. The laboratory and workshop give us direct experience with the physical reality that our models approximate. We begin with spur gears and bolted joints, and proceed from there.
